Bio
Trevor Makara has spent the last 30 years observing life through a camera lens.

"I have been captivated by photography from the start," explains Trevor.  "The camera allows people to observe a moment in time -- in a place that they may never visit.  There is real poetry in that realization."

Many have seen that poetry in Trevor's art.  His work has been featured in numerous publications, blogs, and websites including National Geographic and Esquire Magazine.

Trevor's entry into professional photography is an insight into his personality and his passion for his art.

"For over a year and a half, I was in and out of Doctor's offices and treatment centers," notes Makara.  "I was in the midst of battling cancer, and as you can imagine, a large portion of my time was spent looking at old magazines in waiting rooms.  During that period, I felt that my photography stood up to the professional content in those publications.  Besides a determination to beat cancer -- I resolved to expose my work to the public."

Within weeks, Trevor's first submitted photo "Red Boats at High Tide" was featured on National Geographic's website.  He has had several images selected since that honour.

"Red Boats at High Tide" is a extended exposure photo taken under the historic Santa Monica Pier. The smoke surrounding the boats and the pier's pilings is actually waves flowing in and out.  Neither the lighting nor the colours have been enhanced in anyway.  The red lifeguard boats are a little known feature of the Santa Monica Pier.

"I am often asked how I created that effect," smiles Trevor. "There is no effect. I'm not a purest when it comes to editing. It is an important element in photography -- digital editing is in fact just the 21st century version of the darkroom.  But for me, it was important to develop my eye and my work initially without editing or Photoshop."

Originally from Ottawa, Canada, Trevor and his wife Sylvie live in Santa Monica, California.
